German police detain one person in connection with knife attack

Three people have been killed and eight injured in a knife attack in the western German city of Solingen, police say.

The attacker fled the scene and police are still searching for an "unknown" suspect.

Police say a motive for the attack is still not clear.

Celebrations were underway to mark the 650th anniversary of the city’s foundation when the attack happened.

Local mayor Tim Kurzbach says those who were at the event are in a state of "shock, horror and great grief".

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says the suspect "must be caught quickly and punished to the full extent of the law".
