AZIMIO DEMOS

Ruto and Raila need to meet

In Summary

• Azimio has said its protest demos to remove the government will resume on Wednesday

• Ruto supporters are reluctant to compromise with Azimio since they won the 2022 presidential election

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for a resumption of 'peaceful' demos on Wednesday. So far, the demos have been anything but peaceful, although the opposition blames this on police brutality and/or KK goons pretending to be Azimio supporters.

The demos close down the country. They are causing huge economic damage but that serves Azimio's purpose as they want to make Kenya ungovernable until the Ruto government steps down.

The problem for Azimio is that the government is legitimately elected as the Supreme  Court endorsed the IEBC announcement of William Ruto as president.

The problem for the Ruto government is that 49 percent of Kenyans voted for Raila and many Ruto supporters sympathise with his campaign to bring down the cost of living, even if they don't approve of disruptive demos.

So how do we resolve this deadlock? There is no way around it - Ruto and Raila have to talk face-to-face. Raila must accept that Ruto is president and his government is legally allowed to determine tax rates. Ruto must accept that Raila still has his constituency. They need to make a deal without the hardliners so that the country can go forward peacefully.
