Mandazi is a common snack among Kenyans. Served both at home, in shops and in restaurants.
It's best enjoyed with tea, soda or any drink.
To make mandazi, you will need:
Ingredients
- Two cups of warm water.
- Tablespoon of baking powder.
- Four cups of all-purpose flour.
- 1/2 cup sugar
- Oil
- Salt
Preparation
Step 1
In a bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and sugar and separately, mix the water and the oil.
Step 2
Gradually add this mixture to the flour while kneading it into a dough. Use additional water if necessary.
Step 3
Knead for about fifteen to twenty minutes until a smooth and elastic dough is formed. Let dough rest for several minutes.
Divide the entire dough into six equal round balls.
Step 4
Spread every ball onto a flat surface maintaining a circular shape of the dough. Cut the flattened dough into four equal quadrants.
Step 5
Place all of the dough quadrants on a cookie sheet to prevent the dough from sticking to each other.
Step 6
Heat a few cups of oil for about five minutes in a skillet or deep pot. Carefully put dough quadrants in the hot oil.
Step 7
With caution, turn the dough quadrants a few times until they are golden brown.
Step 8
Once completely fried, take them out and place them on a paper towel to drain the oil and allow them cool.
Serve with hot tea and enjoy.
