American actress and show host Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that she split from actor and musician Will Smith in 2016 and have been living separate lives.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Jada, however, said the two have not legally divorced.

"We did not go public because I think I was not ready yet. We were still trying to figure it out between the two of us how to be in partnership and in regards to how we should present that to people, we hadn't figured that out," she said.

Jada said  by the time they got to 2016, they were tired of trying to fix the marriage and relationship.

"We were still stuck in our fantasy, thinking of what the other person should be," she added.

On why the two are yet to file for a divorce from each other, Jada said she had made a promise that there will never be a reason for them to get a divorce as they would work through whatever came their way.

"I haven't been able to break that promise, we, however, live separately," she noted.

"We've been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got a deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us."

Will and Jada have over the years that they have been separated made news headlines.

Jada had an entanglement with singer August Alsina who revealed through an interview that he had given years of his life to Jada in a romantic relationship.

Alsina claimed that Will Smith had given the relationship the go-ahead.

With all the drama around it, Jada later revealed through her show 'The Red Table' that she indeed had a relationship with Alsina, noting that Will gave his blessing.

At the 2022 Oscars, Will slapped Chris Rock after the comedian joked about Jada's hairstyle. Jada was spotting a bald head.

"Keep my wife's name out of your mouth," Will yelled after the slap then walked back to his seat.

He later resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and was banned from its events for 10 years.

Will also apologised to Chris, calling the slap "unacceptable"
