National Handball league sides Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Kenyatta University (KU) were the winners of women's and men’s handball titles at the Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) games that ended on Sunday at JKUAT grounds.
JKUAT ladies utilised their home ground and fans to defeat league compatriots Kenyatta University while KU men's side beat JKUAT in a Thika Road derby final.
In the men’s final, KU resisted home fans booing, noise and shouts to win the title 19-14 in one of the tightest deciders.
In another tight decider played at JKUAT’s court one, the home side narrowly beat their Thika road rivals 18-17 to claim the women's title. JKUAT were unbeaten in the games, played in a round-robin format.
The winners’ head coach Kevin Mwangi said they had a perfect defence, the best way to win a handball match.
“Girls are slow when it comes to striking and once we managed to defend well, it was easy for us to win such a tense match on our home ground,” said Kimani.
Following the KUSA win, Kimani said the will can now focus on the league.
Losing tactician Geoffrey Barasa remained confident of securing redemption by winning the league but they must improve in attack.
