Six Scrabble players are set to represent Kenya at the World English Scrabble Players Association Championships (WESPAC) in the United States come July.

The six led by Kenya One Allan Oyende, Willy  Mwangi, Philip Mutinda, Martins Mutahi, Michael Gongolo and Gitonga Nderitu are all facing off at the Scrabble Kenya national tournament in Eldoret as part of their preparations ahead of the WESPAC event set for July 22 – 26.

Ndeirtu, who led Kenya to win back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995 said the team has been training well in pursuit of reclaiming the lost glory and ensuring that they win the title.

“As a team, we are well prepared for the championships and our training has been well. Such tournaments are good for us in sharpening skills to ensure that we do well at the championships,” Nderitu said.

The two-day event that kicked off on Saturday morning will end on Sunday.

Also in attendance are world champion Wellington Jighere and Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) president Adekoyejo Adegbesan and Ugandan Edgar Odongkara.

Adegbesan said Kenya has immense talent in Scrabble: “Kenya is the second best scrabble-playing country in Africa after Nigeria. Support is needed to make sure that the sport grows.”
