Malkia Strikers' squad will be whittled down to 16 players before the team departs for the training camp in Morocco.

A 20-member provisional squad was named at the start of June.

The team is expected to hold a week-long training camp at the Nyayo Stadium before heading to North Africa according to Kenya Volleyball Federation acting president Charles Nyaberi.

"The squad will be trimmed to 16 and the decision will entirely be made by the technical bench,"Nyaberi said.

The team will train in Morocco for one month as opposed to the one and a half months initially planned. The Brazilian coaches will join the team in Morocco.

"Morocco has the best facilities in Africa and that's why FIVB settled on the nation. Also, the CAVB president comes from Morocco, making it an easier decision."

Malkia will jet to France on July 25 to participate in the Challenger Cup. The four-day championship is set for July 27-30 in Laval.

Kenya is Africa's representative in the competition. "We hope that the team will claim as many points as possible because that will count towards qualifying for the Volleyball Nations League as well as the Paris 2024 Olympic Games," Nyaberi hinted.

Malkia will also spend time at Miramas for the National Olympic Committee of Kenya programme. The team will then directly jet to Cameroon on August 4, a day before the Africa Nations Championships serve off.

Kenya was ranked 19 out of 24 after competing at the World Championships last year.

NOC-K secretary general Francis Mutuku declared his support for the team saying: "Malkia is one of our top priority teams in terms of support considering their past achievement. We know how  crucial the Challenger Cup is in terms of accumulating points."

Mutuku was speaking at the Nyayo Stadium during the unveiling of the squad.
