Kenya win silver at Africa beach games in Tunisia

The team claimed Kenya's first medal after losing to hosts Tunisia 3-1 on the shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw in two sets.

Kenya handball women's team won silver at the ongoing second edition of Africa beach games in Hammamet, Tunisia.

Led by captain Michelle Odhiambo, the team claimed Kenya's first medal after losing to hosts Tunisia 3-1 on the shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw in two sets.

Kenya showed resilience to level matters after trailing their opponents early on. However, experience was the difference as the North Africans won the gold medal.

Kenya finished fourth in the 2019 edition held in Sal, Cape Verde.

Adhiambo, who also skippers  the national regular team, said: "The team is in the right direction considering most players are new and playing for the first time at this level. The future is bright. Winning the silver is an extra motivation."

"We have gleaned lessons that will make us a greater team even though we fell at the last hurdle," she added.

Tunisia won the first set 24-19, thanks to an error-strewn performance by Kenya towards the end of the first set.

Kenya regrouped in the second set to draw back to level terms with a score of 20-17 to make the tie 1-1.

Tunisia reigned supreme in the shootout.

In other results, the men's team achieved a fifth-place finish after dropping to the classification matches.

This accomplishment represents a significant improvement from their ninth-place finish in the inaugural edition of the games held in 2019.

The outstanding performance of both teams reflects Kenya's commitment to developing and excelling in beach handball on the African stage.
