Vihiga Queens' head coach Boniface Nyamunyamu will name the squad that will represent the country in the Cecafa tournaments next week—three weeks before the annual competition is held in Uganda.

The week-long championship will be staged from August 12-19 in Kampala, where the nine-team competition will be played in two venues.

Nyamunyamu, who guided Vihiga to the Kenya Women's Premier League (KWPL) title in May,  believes the calibre of players he has, have what it takes to secure the sole slot reserved for the region in the Caf Champions League tournament.

“I am going to pick players who are technically and tactically gifted and fit in our system,” Nyamunyamu said.

“ As a team, we have to maximise our chances to stand a chance of winning the championship and making it to the tournament proper later in the year. We are going to carry players who can deliver on our targets," he added.

The four-time WPL champions are placed in Group 'B' alongside JKT Queens of Tanzania, AS Kigali of Rwanda and the New Generation of Zanzibar. Vihiga Queens will open their campaign against New Generation FC of Zanzibar on August 13.

They face AS Kigali in the second game before wrapping up the preliminaries with JKT Queens of Tanzania. All their games will be played at KCCA Stadium in Kampala.

Group ‘A’ will have five teams led by Kampala Queens of Uganda, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, FC FAD of Djibouti, Burundi's Buja Queens, and Yei Joint Stars of South Sudan. Group A matches will be held at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, Jinja.

The tournament’s winner will represent the region in the Caf tournaments in Ivory Coast later in the year.

Last year, Simba Queens represented the region after they emerged as Cecafa champions. However, the 2021 champions Vihiga Queens failed to take part due to Fifa suspension.
