Youth Commonwealth Games team manager Janeth Jepkosgei has emphasised the need for early preparations ahead of this year’s Youth Commonwealth Games to be held in Trinidad and Tobago next month.

The 2007 world 800m champion exuded confidence that Kenya will leave a mark at the Youth Club Games set for August 4-11, only if they set the right ingredients in place.

Jepkosgei, who also won the 800m gold medalist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, said: "I emphasise the importance of thorough preparations before embarking on their journey."

"Together with the coaches, I'm looking forward to having active and intense preparation for the athletes. These are our future champions and we owe it to them to give our absolute best.”

A total of 38 athletes reported to camp at Kasarani, featuring seven disciplines.

These include athletics (400m men and women, 800m men and women, 4x400m mixed relay, women's javelin throw, 1500m men and women, 3000m men and women), cycling (road race), para-athletics, women's rugby 7s, swimming (100m men freestyle and 50m freestyle), triathlon (men and women), and beach volleyball (women).

During the previous games held in the Bahamas, Team Kenya secured four medals.

These include gold medals in the 1500m race through John Mwangi, 3000m from Edwin Kiplagat and 3000m by Emmaculate Chepkirui. Chepkurui also struck a silver medal in the 1500m race.
