Andersen High school principal Julius Mibei expects their volleyball (boys) and netball (girls) to upset the form book when they debut at the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term Two games in Kakamega this week.

Mibei observed that they overcame tough opposition at the Rift Valley region championships and this has left them optimistic about gracing the East Africa games in Rwanda.

“We came out triumphant against tough opposition, especially at the Rift Valley region championships. We hope to replicate this at the national championships and book tickets to the East African games,” said Mibei.

Andersen reached the volleyball final last year but fell 3-0 ( 25-22, 25-22, 25-21) to Olmoran. However, they exerted revenge this year, beating their rivals 3-2 (25-17, 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 16-14) to clinch the region's single ticket to Kakamega.

“If we managed to triumph over national champions Cheptil, then we can beat any team. However, we are wary of national runners-up Namwela, who have a very strong team,” he said.

In Kakamega, Andersen are in Pool 'B' of the volleyball competition alongside former champions Tetu High from Central, Nairobi’s Ruthimitu and Nyanza’s Onjiko Boys.

Mibei said reaching the national championships was not by luck.

“We have prepared our boys very well by exposing them to various volleyball tournaments across the country. There is also teamwork between the teachers and students,” said Mibei.

Namwela, from Western, lead Pool 'A' alongside Vitengeni from Coast, Tumaini Secondary from Eastern and North Eastern representative.

In netball, Andersen whipped National Youth Service Girls’ Nakuru 52-19 at the regional finals in Laikipia and Mibei expects this dominance to continue in Kakamega.

“It was an easy win for us at the regional finals. You can tell by the margin. But as we go to the nationals, we don’t want to underrate any team since we don't know how prepared they are. We are making sure that we do what is needed at the right time,” added Mibei.

Andersen are seeded top in Pool 'B' alongside North Eastern representatives, Syumile from Eastern and St Dorcas from Nairobi.

Pool 'A' has Oyugi Ogango from Nyanza, Coast’s Kaya Tiwi, Kinale from Central and Bukokholo from Western.
