Despite training with KCB for only a week, Marlyn Terry, a Form 3 student at Kwathanze High defied all odds to emerge MVP during the just concluded Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Playoffs at Moi Stadium, Kasarani.

“I'm delighted to play for KCB.  I was hesitant at first because this is a national club but when I made the move, the reception was really nice. I dream of becoming the best player and playing internationally," said Terry.

''I started playing volleyball at Kwanthanze while in Form 1 and I am happy to have joined KCB after hardly three years into the sport,” she added.

She said her call to KCB was frightening and didn't know how to handle the whole issue. "I was quite frightened to join them and wondered just how I could fit and play with such experienced players," she revealed.

However, when she made the move, she received a lot of support and encouragement from her teammates. Terry played a key role in catapulting the bankers to the first national title in 15 years after beating Kenya Pipeline 3-1.

She reckoned that her long-term plan is to emulate Kenya's professional player Sharon Chepchumba, who plies her trade at AC PAOK in Greece. Chepchumba played for the bankers for two seasons between 2019 and 2022.

“I want to be the greatest player. Not necessarily like her but I see myself in Sharon Chepchumba's shoes. I like how she plays and how disciplined she is. Every other time Chumba plays, she is declared MVP and that's my desire," said the 16-year-old.

She said while it is difficult to combine sports and books, she is determined to strike the balance as she aspires to become better in both fields.

She said the presence of her schoolmates, teachers, and coach motivated her to play better and win the MVP gong.

KCB Coach Japheth Munala described Terry as a  fast-rising player and very lethal. "I think she will go places in her position. She plays the same position as Chumba and I believe she is a player to watch."

“When Chumba left, we had struggled a lot to win this national league but she came and made the difference. She has to study hard and train hard as the future is bright for her," he concluded.
