Western Jaguars coach, Mike Malungu, is concerned with the team's long lay-off ahead of this weekend's Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men's Premier League matches against Greensharks and Kenya Police respectively.

Malungu's charges play Green Sharks on Saturday before taking on Kenya Police on Sunday.

Malungu said he is wary of the competition ahead with both their opponents' very formidable sides.

"Police have this 'never say die attitude while Greensharks approach the games with nothing to lose notion despite operating in the relegation zone," he revealed.

He added: " Sharks started the season badly but seem determined to make amends and can be dangerous," he noted.

The layoff that started in October last year could play havoc on them before they settle down.

He, however, said they will be banking on their four players who have been part of the national team.

Defenders Mathias Gularire and Charles Ashihundu, striker Moses Ademba and midfielder Sheldon Kimutai were all part of the national team.

The four featured in Olympic qualifiers in October and African Games qualifiers in November.

They were also part of the national team at the World Hockey 5 tournament in Oman early this month.

Western Jaguars beat Sikh Union 2-0 with the four players playing a key role upon return from Oman.

“The whole team put up a very good show. They were quite tactical, which made it hard for us. They played well and were committed,” said coach Malungu.

Defending champions Butali Warriors lead the log with 39 points, followed closely by Jaguars with 34 points. Kenya Police are third on 31 points.

Malungu said he is hoping to win their weekend matches in a bid to keep pace with the leaders.
