Vihiga County secondary school games have been suspended until next month due to the financial crisis.

The games were earlier scheduled to run from this week (June 19-23).

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Vihiga County vice chairman, Tom Aura, said they had received communication on the same from the county's director of education, David Koech.

He said the games will now run from  July 4-6 subject to the availability of the capitation funds in time.

"We received communication while in our meeting with coaches at Ebusakami Girls Secondary School asking us to put our plans on hold due to the unavailability of funds," he said.

Aura said the decision will affect the entire Western Kenya region.

“We were told to push to next month since many schools, especially day schools, were currently struggling and can not afford to present teams for this year’s competition,” said Aura.

“Most schools have had to cater for their expenses at the zonal level to qualify for the county finals. We are yet to receive 30 per cent of Term One schools capitation, making it difficult for us to proceed with the competitions as earlier planned,” he added.

Aura said secondary school games will have to wait longer until funds are made available.

The tournament was set to take place in Luanda sub-county with Bunyore Girls’ High School hosting basketball.

Football was to be staged at Ebusakami Girls and Esiandumba Secondary while Mumboha were to host netball and some of the soccer matches.

Ibubi Girls Secondary School is set to host lawn tennis, table tennis and badminton. Rugby matches were to be hosted at Emuhaya’s Es’saba and Esalwa grounds respectively.

Aura said they would have preferred to stage the games as planned to avoid a scenario, where a school loses a critical player to injury ahead of Western Region games.

Injured players need time to heal and represent their teams at the regionals, but these delays may disadvantage some teams,” he added.
