Former Kenya international Victor Siero is the new Strathmore University handball team coach.
In an interview, the tactician, who started handling the varsity side two weeks ago, said he believes the boys have what it takes to battle it out with the big boys.
“The team is ok. They have the energy and belief, and I believe they will prove a handful to the top guns in the league,” noted Siero.
“Everything is in place. I will inject one or two new things into the setup and see how it goes.”
Strathmore finished fifth in the 25-team league, winning 18 matches, drawing two and losing four of their 24 games.
They just did enough to make the cut in the six-team Super Cup that starts in two weeks.
Other teams that will battle it out on the Super Cup are league champions National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), cup holders Ulinzi, Equity Bank, General Service Unit, Strathmore and Black Mamba.
The women's category will feature the newly crowned national champions Ulinzi Sharks, cup holders Nairobi Water Queens, NCPB as well as the Bungoma-based Rangers side.
“The boys did well to finish fifth considering they played a considerable number of matches without a coach. With someone now to drive them, they should do better,” he said.
Siero, who was a key member of the NCPB team, played his last club handball in 2012 and said he would not change the team much.
“We are already in training for the Super Cup. For now, not much will change. I want to use this tournament to gauge the team and see what needs to be injected to make them a force.”
After his last league outing with Cereals, Siero then joined the national team coaching staff and worked with veteran coach Peter Mwathi from 2015 to 2019.
