Daystar University coach Martin Kamau applauded his boys for their performance in the league on debut despite finishing outside the top 10.

The students finished 11th in the 25-team Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) league and the tactician is convinced they can do better.

The teams that finished in the top six positions in the league, including four in the women’s category, secured their slots in the Super Cup. This year’s tournament is slated to start in two weeks.

He said he will be targeting to qualify for the Super Cup next year.

“Finishing position 11th for the first time in a competitive league wasn’t bad for us. I am okay with that though I felt like we lost some games, which we would have won in my assessment,” Kamau offered.

He went on: “This is the boys' first season; therefore,  11 out of 25 teams for me is not bad. We have to go hard next season. I am looking forward to increasing the bench power. I am looking at adding two to three players in the coming season.”

The tactician plans to have a pre-season that will help players get ready for the new season.

“I also expect the players to be more responsible and handle each game at a time. Being young people, sometimes they get excited about a game and they end up losing. So I expect we deal with player mentality.”

On the women’s side, Kamau said they did not perform to the level they were supposed to play in their second season, even though they have improved from 11 to 9, They lost to teams they were supposed to beat.

“The girls know that and next season we are not going to joke anymore with ladies' games. We have to win, we have to work hard,” he said.

“This group of girls is full of quality, it’s just finding the balance and they play.”

Kamau revealed that he expects two or three additions to the team in the coming season. Nationally Daystar men’s team lost in the quarter-finals while the ladies are champions. They have not lost any single Kusa game from the league to the national level.
