Defending Nyanza region Sevens champions St. Mary’s Yala stormed the quarter-finals after recording two wins on the opening day of the games at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho.

In the first match, Yala, coached by George Kerima,  beat hosts Cardinal Otunga High School 26-14 before drubbing St Paul’s Gekano 34-5 to qualify for Friday’s quarter-finals.

Kerima said: “I’m happy we have already qualified for the quarters. However, we want to win our last game so that we finish on top of our pool.”

Former champions Maseno School recorded mixed results. In the first game, Maseno School beat Gendia 32-14 before losing 17-10 to minnows and debutants Otieno Oyoo. It was sweet revenge for Otieno Oyoo who lost 7-0 to Maseno in the Kisumu County finals.
