Top talents in this year’s Kenya Secondary Sports Association (KSSA) games are set to benefit with scholarships from Zetech University.

Wycliffe Sirengo, the head of sports at the University said that the institution’s officials have been scouting for top talents in the games who stand a chance to benefit with the University’s Sh10 million annual scholarships for higher learning.

He said that the sports scholarship programme provides fully paid academic sponsorship to deserving students.

He noted that the programme was inspired by the tremendous wins and sports excellence that the university continues to dominate in the sports arena in the country.

He noted that currently, the University provides sponsorship to various categories including football (both genders), Basketball (both genders), volleyball (men) and rugby (men).

Speaking in an interview, Sirengo said the beneficiaries will join the University’s sports teams including Zetech Sparks (basketball), Zetech Oaks (rugby) and Zetech Titans (football).

The sports head noted that the aim is to promote sporting activities and nurture students’ talents, adding that the initiative seeks to motivate sportsmen and women that sports can be an active source of income.

“The University understands that apart from excelling in academics, there’s a need to nurture talents and encourage young people to pursue their passion in sports. I attended the games to identify promising athletes who will benefit from our programme,” Sirengo said.

Sirengo divulged that Zetech is developing modern and global standards sports facilities in its expansive Technology Park, Mang’u campus in Juja, Kiambu County as it seeks to take sporting activities among students a notch higher.

“The facilities will be available, not only for students but also for international fixtures and competitions,” he noted.

At the same time, Sirengo maintained that Zetech University is keen on nurturing talents among its students noting that actively engaging students in sports helps eradicate drugs and substance abuse.

"We have made our students ambassadors for the fight against drugs and substance abuse through sports. Both our men's and ladies’ teams have ruled over various sports in the country because we are committed to promoting sports in our University," he said.

At the same time, the official highlighted that sporting activities enable learners to leave learning institutions having been trained holistically to better adapt to the changing job market.

"Sports enable students to become more holistic beyond just academics. From this, our students can better their skills and at the same time enable them to explore another aspect of life," he said.
