Seahorses and Supermarlins are among the top clubs expected at the Kenya Aquatics National Age Group Swimming Championship in Mombasa next month.

Seahorses coach Peter Mwangangi said his charges have intensified preparations for the three-day championships.

Mwangangi's team ruled the Nairobi County Championships last weekend.

However, there is still room for improvement.

“The swimmers did exceptionally well over the weekend. I'm confident my swimmers will be in top form in Mombasa," said Mwangangi.

Melissa Alala and Alma Ngaruiya are among the swimmers to watch with Mwangangi expecting more talent to be identified during the championships.

He expects tough competition from Mombasa Aquatics, Supermarlins, Crawford School and Bandari Swim Club.

"Mombasa being the home team will be formidable. They will be the team to beat but my team will be up for the challenge,” he said.

Mombasa Aquatics chairperson Heize Kahindo said: "We have started our preparations with the national office and we will soon be announcing updates on the championships."

The event is a qualifier for the Cana Zone Three Championships planned for November in Burundi and the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in December.

Kahindo expects tough competition.

"It's going to be exciting.  I believe the majority of the swimmers are honing their skills in readiness for the championships. I hope the swimmers who will be selected for the two (international) events will do the country proud," he said.
