Reigning African Rally Champion Karan Patel is eyeing back-to-back victories as he gears up to defend his title at the Rallye International du Burundi scheduled for September 20-22.

This event marks the third leg of the 2024 African Rally Championship (ARC), with the series also set to roar through Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya.

Notably, Rallye Côte d'Ivoire Bandama won’t feature in the 2024 ARC calendar, in line with a more cost-conscious approach after serving as the season opener in 2023.

Karan, who has already bagged wins in Uganda and Zambia, is looking to extend his lead at the top of the ARC standings.

In May, Karan dominated the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, winning eight of nine stages in his Skoda R5.

He followed that up with another impressive triumph in Zambia in June.

Now, with his long-time navigator Khan Tauseef by his side in the Skoda R5, Patel is confident of another strong showing in Burundi.

“It will be our second time out in Burundi and we are looking forward to having a good event. We managed to finish in first position last year so definitely we intend to maintain the same,” Karan commented.

Last year, Karan and Tauseef took the Burundi title in a Ford Fiesta R5, clocking a time of 1:44:45.

The introduction of Rally5-Kit cars, homologated at the local level with FIA support, adds an exciting dimension to the ARC, making the competition more accessible and cost-effective.

Karan’s focus remains on retaining his spot at the summit of the leaderboard.

“We intend to continue sitting at the summit of the current leaderboard to showcase our passion, commitment and might in this sport,” added Patel.

He was, however, quick to acknowledge the unpredictable nature of rallying. “With rallying, nothing is guaranteed,” he said.

He identified Uganda’s Jas Mangat as a key rival but remains steadfast in securing victory.

“Jas Mangat of Uganda is always a threat with his prowess and speed behind the wheels but, we are ready to take on him and other top drivers who have always been part and parcel of this event.”

Karan and his team are leaving nothing to chance, with preparations in full swing.

“We are preparing well. I am keeping fit and the car is under close watch with our team manager ensuring we are ready for the race,” he added.
