Equity Bank's chess team captain Njagi Kabugu has credited their two-week intensive training camp to their success at the inter-bank chess championships.

Equity secured their second consecutive interbank title after a 3.5-0.5 victory over Bank of Africa with two rounds to spare over the weekend.

The bank had made a significant investment in its chess program by organising a two-week intensive training camp at Luke Hotel in readiness for the championship.

Led by Kabugu, with support from coach Benard Wanjala and Hugh Misiko, the camp focused on tactical drilling, mental conditioning and sharpening the squad for the tournament.

This, Kabugu reckons was the key to their dominant display at the chess championships.

“We went into each match prepared and confident and our results speak for themselves. Our hard work and the bank’s investment paid off,” he said.

Across 15 rounds, Equity dropped just one match—to the Central Bank of Kenya—showcasing their tactical prowess and consistency.

Their showdown against Bank of Africa was a masterclass in strategy and precision, with Equity's players leaving no room for mistakes.

This dominant performance not only secured their second consecutive crown but also cemented their spot at the top of Kenyan banking chess.

Chess Kenya also extended its congratulations to Equity Bank for their continued dominance, both in the Interbank Championship and the  National Chess Premier League.

Equity sit top of the log leading Victoria Elites and Kisumu Chess Club in the podium places.
