Nairobi Prisons opened their season with a commanding 3-1 (25-19, 26-28, 27-25, 25-18) victory over Kenya Forest Service (KFS) on Friday during the second leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation Men’s National League at Nyayo National Stadium's outdoor court.
Nairobi Prisons coach Sally Wanjala credited the team’s solid performance to their tactical serving and resilient covering.
“The boys played so well. Our victory is thanks to our good services, especially the jump floaters, though our covering was a bit demanding," she said.
Looking ahead, Wanjala expressed optimism about upcoming fixtures.
"Tomorrow, we face Kenya Prisons, and I hope for similar results. On Sunday, we meet Kenya Army, and we are well-prepared, hoping the boys replicate today’s effort."
Wanjala highlighted the competitive spirit in the league, adding, "Each team is here to compete, not just participate. It’s not automatic to win this season as teams have trained and prepared better compared to last season."
Kenya Forest Service coach Wachira Gatwiria admitted their preparation had been hindered by work commitments, which saw them miss the opening matches in Nyeri for the first leg.
“Owing to a tight work schedule, we failed to honor our fixtures in Nyeri, which cost us valuable experience and exposure.," said Gatwiria.
"I’m looking forward to securing six points in the weekend matches to bounce back," he added.
In other results, fifteen-time men’s champions General Service Unit (GSU) the current defending champions cruised past Administration Police (AP) Kenya in straight sets, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-19).
The third match saw KPA sweep Trailblazers 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-12) in a dominant performance, with coach James Ontere commending his players' execution.
“The match was good. They followed service to the latter, especially in defense and even backcourt. I thank the federation for the support accorded,” he said.
Looking ahead to their next match against Administration Police, Ontere added, “We will play game by game.”
Meanwhile, their scheduled encounter with Ulinzi has been postponed as Ulinzi is participating in military games in Nigeria.
Trailblazers coach attributed the loss to mental challenges, stating, “The loss was purely psychological.
As per our training, we had done as we trained on attacks and blocking. The boys executed 60 percent. We trained indoors, but the match was played outdoors. Technically, there was no problem, maybe one or two reception errors.”
Trailblazers will now turn their focus to Sunday’s clash against Mount Kenya Baze Yetu.
Equity Bank beat Rift Valley Prisons 3-0(25-13,25-23,25-18) in the last match.
