World 3000m steeplechase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech has her eyes trained on next month's national trials for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary slated for August 19-27.

But before that, Chepkoech continues with her build-up, winning the second heat of the women's 5000m at the Athletics Kenya National Championships held at Nyayo Stadium after clocking 15:54.98.

She beat Judith Chepkwony to second in 1:55.40 while Betty Chelangat finished third in 15:56.8.

"This race is part of my preparations for the national trials. I am using the nationals for speed endurance since I want to be at my fastest heading to the World Championships. My target on Saturday is to win the race," said Chepkoech, who missed last year's World Championships in Eugene, Oregon due to a tendon injury.

"I did not go to Oregon due to an injury and it really felt bad. This year am in good shape and my body feels great. I am hopeful of making it to Budapest. My hope is to not get injured in the build-up," she pointed out.

"Pacing for Faith Kipyegon in Florence as she set a new 1500m record boosted my morale. I feel great and ready to compete on the global stage. My target is to set a good time at the national trials and improve it in Hungary."

The 2019 World Championships winner will face a quality field in the final on Saturday, led by Janet Chepngetich, world bronze medallist Margaret Chelimo and Lilian Kasait, who recorded better times than Chepkoech in Heat 1.

Chepkoech's time ranked her at number eight in Saturday's start list.

"I expect the final to be tough but am ready for such a competition. I will not put myself under any pressure I will just run my race and see what the day will have in offer for me, However, I will try better today's time," she said.
