The 10,000m national champion Irene Kimais tore a quality field to win the women's race on Saturday during the Athletics Kenya national trials at the Nyayo Stadium.

Kimais cut the tape in 31 minutes and 52.21 sec, beating Agnes Jebet to second in 31:52.45 in a highly-contested battle.

The duo booked their tickets to the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary scheduled for August 19-27 by the virtue of having met the entry standards.

"I can't simply explain the feeling of winning the race and getting the opportunity to represent Kenya at a global level," an elated Kimais said.

"It was a tight battle until the last lap. I still need to work on my speed and embrace teamwork in order to bring the lost glory home from Budapest," Kimais, who will make her maiden appearance at the world championships, noted.

For Jebet, the win came as a surprise as she had not prepared well.

"My preparations were insufficient. I came here to try my luck but the achievement is worth celebrating as much as the race was tactical," said Jebet.

"All I can promise is a podium finish in Budapest. We have to end the eight-year title drought in Budapest," she added.

Vivian Cheruiyot  last won the title in the specialty in 2015.

Elsewhere, Jacob Krop won the men's 5000m race in 13 minutes and 15.72 seconds to qualify for the global showpiece.

Krop beat the Commonwealth Games silver medalist Daniel Simiu to second in 13;16.05 while Cornelius Kemboi finished third in 13:17.84.

Kemboi will have to bank on the panel of selectors to realise his Budapest dream.

Kenya has the privilege to send four athletes in the race to Budapest since Nicholas Kimeli, who has also qualified for the double-distance after winning in the trials on Friday, has a wild card by the virtue of winning the Diamond League last year.

In the meantime, the national 200m champion Boniface Mweresa cruised to victory in the 400m race, cutting the tape in the one-lap race in a time of 45.42 sec.

Mweresa beat Kennedy Muthoki to second in 45.51 sec while Zablon Ekwam completed the podium in 45.52 sec.
