Moraa the only Kenyan representative in 800m semis

Commonwealth champion Mary Moraa will be a lone ranger in the semi-finals of the women's 800m after teammates exited at the preliminary stage.

To reach the semis, Moraa won Heat 2  in 1:59.89 ahead of United States' Raevyn Rogers (2:00.06) and Ethiopia's Worknesh Mesele, who clocked 2:00.13 for third place.

Kenya's Vivian Chebnet failed to make the cut for the semis after placing fourth in 2:01.2. The heat was won by Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson in 1:59.53 with Prudence Sekgodison second in 1:59.72 and Finland's Eveliina Maattanen (2:00.41) third.

The third Kenyan, Naomi Korir, also hopped out of the championships after placing seventh in her heat in 2:0142. Benin's Noélie Yarigo won the race in 1:59.96, followed by Christina Hering of Germany ( 2:00.06 ). Australia's Abbey Caldwell completed the top three places in the heat in 2:00.29.

In an interview, Moraa said the weather conditions were too harsh but she is happy to have advanced.

She said judging by the times being posted, everyone seems to have prepared and she just hopes that all will be well.

She said for her it's one step at a time but she is focused on the final.

"I will fight to ensure I reach the final and after that, we will know what happens. However, this is not easy," said Moraa.

Meanwhile, world 10,000m bronze medallist Daniel Simiu is already back home to prepare for the Brussels Diamond League on September 8, where he will feature in the 25-lap event.

He said he would be comfortable preparing at home since the environment is conducive.
