Kenya’s track star Faith Kipyegon has pledged to unpack more surprises in the future, just days after bagging two gold medals at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics championships in Hungary.

Kipyegon, who set the National Athletics Centre in Bupdapest alight with victories in the women’s 1500m and 500m, was among the first batch of Kenyan athletes to return to the country on Monday night.

“Expect more from me. I am still strong, still young. I just want to empower young people to learn that it is all possible,” Kipyegon said.

The multiple world champion arrived alongside compatriot Mary Moraa, who stormed to the women’s 800m title, the first for the country in 10 years.

Moraa dedicated her accomplishment to her dedicated support system.

“I have learned a lot. To get to the top, you need to be patient and train and listen to the coaches. I also owe a lot to my family and my country,” Moraa stated.

“This is the first time I am being received in such a big way. I’ve seen how well Faith gets received and I was also looking to get a similar reception,” she added.

The last Kenyan to win the two-lap race was Eunice Sum at the 2013 Moscow Championships.

In Budapest, Kenya placed fifth out of the 39 countries that graced the competition after clinching 10 medals (three gold, three silver, and four bronze).

Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum, who received the athletes at the JKIA, hailed Team Kenya for making the nation proud.

“We are very proud of their performance. The government will always purpose to assist our athletes to win more medals by pumping more funds to get them adequately prepared,” Tum said.

Jubilant crowds gathered at the JKIA to receive the Kenyan athletes amid song and dance.
