Kenya's Daniel Simiu wins Delhi half marathon

World 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Simiu Ebenyo produced a master-class performance at the Delhi Elite Men's Half Marathon race on Sunday to finish first in a provisional time of 59:27.

Charles Matata of team Kenya came in second with a time of 60:51 whereas Ethiopia’s Addisu Gobena finished third in a time of 60:51.

Simiu adds yet another title to his name this year after bagging a silver medal in the 10,000m in the world athletics championships held in Budapest and another silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in the same race.

Simiu was also part of a 1-2-3 Kenyan finish in the men’s half marathon at the World Road Running Championships in Riga, Latvia on October 1 where he clocked 59:14 to finish second.

The 28-year-old produced one of the highlights of the inaugural edition of the championships when he beckoned Sabastian Sawe to take the lead in the race and go all the way for gold.

Simiu later on expressed that his move to let Sawe take gold instead of going for it himself was in the spirit of sportsmanship.

The rest of team Kenya at the Delhi half marathon were; Isaac Kipkemboi who came in fourth in a time of 60:53, Isia Lasoi fifth in 60:55, Leonard Barsoton sixth in 61:36, Roncer Konga finished seventh in 62:05 and Vincent Kimaiyo eighth in a time of 63:18

In the women’s race, Rio Olympics champion Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia came first in a time of 67:59 followed closely by Uganda’s Stella Chesang in a time of 68:28.

Kenya’s Viola Chepngeno finished third clocking 69:09 followed by Aberash Minseiwo of Ethiopia who clocked 69:50.

Vivian Cheruiyot finished fifth with 71:26 followed by the Ethiopian trio of Anchinalu Dessie(71:34), Bertukan Welde (72:01) and Mare Dibaba (72:02) who finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
