AK shelve first track and field weekend meeting

The event was postponed because it coincided with the inaugural Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run which will be held on December 2 in Uasin Gishu County.

In Summary

The first Athletics Kenya (AK) weekend meeting initially scheduled for December 1 -2 will now be held on December 8 and 9 at Moi Stadium in Kisumu City.

The event was postponed because it coincided with the inaugural Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run which will be held on December 2 in Uasin Gishu County.

The two-day event will feature sprints, middle distance, field events and relays. Some of the events earmarked for the meeting are 60m, 100m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles for men, 200m, 400m, and 400m hurdles. Others are— 800m, 1, 500m, 3, 000m, 4x100m relay, and 4x400m relay.

Other events will be the long jump, triple jump, shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin (both men and women), according to a statement from AK. 

At the same time, the Kisii Half Marathon will be held on December 16, according to AK Nyanza South chairman, Peter Angwenyi.

“AK will collaborate with the County Government of Kisii to hold the event. I’m happy that the Kisii Half Marathon has made a comeback and it’s officially in the AK calendar,” Angwenyi said.

He also announced that the inaugural Nyamira Challenge will be held on December 29 in Borabu Sub County. It will be held in memory of the late Olympic gold medallist, Naftali Temu.

Angwenyi added that the third edition of the Nyamira Great Run 21km race, which is sponsored by the Nyamira County Government will be held in May. “The Nyamira Great Run has been a huge success and we are looking forward to a bigger event next year,” said Angwenyi.

He said Gusii Stadium has been selected to host trials for World Under-20 on July 19 and 20. The selected athletes will head to camp in Nairobi ahead of the World U- 20 championships scheduled for Lima, Peru on August 26-31.

“I’m excited because Kisii will host several events in the upcoming track and field season. This will help rekindle the athletics spirit in the region. I want to appeal to local athletes to start preparations early,” added Angwenyi, who is also the AK Mountain Running coordinator.
