Regional cross country meeting next in line on AK calendar

Track and field events return on January 26-27 with the third AK weekend meeting at the Nyayo Stadium.

The Athletics Kenya regional cross-country meetings are scheduled for this Friday as per the 2023/24 season calendar.

Headlining the calendar will be the Kenya Defence Forces and National Police Service cross-country championships at Ulinzi Sports Complex and Ngong Race Course respectively.

The last edition of the KDF meeting in January last year was won by two-time 5,000m Olympic silver medallist Hellen Obiri and World Half Marathon silver medallist Kibiwott Kandie respectively.

In the National Police Service races, three-time World Half Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor won the title ahead of world 10,000m silver medalist Daniel Simiu.

AK University cross-country championships will take place on the same day at Kabarak University in Nakuru.

Saturday’s events will include the National Youth Service and Kenya Prisons Service cross-country meet at NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil and Kenya Prisons Staff Training College(PSTC), Ruiru respectively.

Chicago Marathon champion Ruth Chepng’etich is the defending champion for the women's race. Other regions will also stage their respective events in a bid to select teams for the f National Championships.

The nationals will also serve as a yardstick to pick a team for the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships set for March 30 in Belgrade, Serbia.

The 33rd edition of the Discovery Kenya cross-country meeting will take place at the Eldoret Sports Club on January 28 before the focus turns to the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country tour on February 3 in Eldoret.

The Sirikwa race will be used by AK to decide on Team Kenya's selection for the Africa Cross-Country Championship on February 25 in Tunis, Tunisia.

The last edition of the Africa X-country was held in 2018 in South Africa.

Other races that will be taking place in February include the Africa Games Trials on February 16-17 at Nyayo Stadium as well as the International University Sports Federation (FISU) cross-country on February 17-18 in Muscat, Oman.
