Kenyans shine at Africa Cross Country Championships in Tunisia

Chengeno led a 1-2 Team Kenya podium finish in the senior women’s race.

Cynthia Chepngeno, Vincent Langat and Gideon Kipngetich were the winners at Sunday’s Africa Cross Country Championships held at the Citrus Golf Club in Hammamet, Tunisia.

Chengeno led a 1-2 Team Kenya podium finish in the senior women’s race.

She clocked 32:31.04 ahead of 2010 Youth Olympic Games 2,000m champion Virginia Nyambura, who timed 32:33.45 as Ethiopian Azimeraw Degitu spoiled a Kenyan podium sweep in 33:03.85 for the bronze medal. Kenyan Gladys Kwamboka was fourth after clocking 33:10.18.

It was another Kenyan 1-2 podium finish in the 10km senior men’s race as Langat led Naibei Mayabei home in 28:31.28 and 28:40.27 respectively.

Ethiopian Gemechu Dida completed the podium in 28:57.23, just seconds ahead of Ugandan Abel Chebet’s 29:01.81.

Kenya also won the mixed relay gold when Edwin Kiprono anchored Winfred Nzisa, Victor Mutwi and Miriam Cherop for the title. Ethiopians Urgesa Teddese, Burguda Aduna, Adehena Kasaye and Danbobbi Dube settled for silver while Morocco bagged the bronze medal through Rizqy Hafid, Igram Ouaziz, Tindoufi Mohamed and Farouk Katwa.

Gideon Kipngetich clocked 23:16.34 for the gold medal followed by Joash Kiprotich ( 23:17.31 ) Titus Kiprotich ( 23:18.02 ) and

Simon Maywa ( 23:21.96 ).

However, it was not good news in the women’s 6km under 20 category as Ethiopia swept the podium with top Kenyan, Judy Chepngetich finishing sixth in 21:03.05.

Ethiopian Diriba Dida took the gold medal in 20:59.33 ahead of Ademas Yennesh (21:00.18), Dagnaw Timebeb (21:00.58), Yadeti Mekedes (21:02.16) and Olekaba Abera (21:03.05).
