KATTISO selects 61 for National Athletics Championships

The team shall report at Kabete National Polytechnic on Tuesday for preparations for national championships.

The Kenya Technical Institutions Sports Organization (KATTISO) has selected 61 athletes for the National Athletics Championships set for this week at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi.

National Championships will run from Thursday to Saturday,

KATTISO secretary-general,  Edward Sogoni said the team for the event scheduled to start on Thursday to Saturday, was selected during the national athletics and indoor games held at Eregi Teachers Training College over the weekend.

“The team will report at Kabete National Polytechnic on Tuesday for preparations ahead of the nationals. This is the second time we are fielding a team in the nationals and we expect our athletes to go head to head with the elite runners in the country,” said Sogoni.

He added: “We selected the top two athletes in each category. Our national championship was very competitive and the athletes posted good times,”

During the two-day championships, North Rift reigned supreme after garnering 18 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze medals, beating hosts Western region to second place with eight gold, 18 silver and nine bronze medals.

South Rift came third with eight gold, six silver and nine bronze medals while Lake Region finished fourth with two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Mountain Kenya East Region was fifth with one gold, silver and bronze as the Northern Region finished sixth with one gold and one bronze.

Nairobi settled for the seventh position with two silver and three bronze medals.

In the special category (men), the Western Region emerged top with 19 gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals while the Lake Region finished second with 12 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze medals. Nairobi was third with two gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

In the women’s category, Lake Region emerged top with six gold, six silver and five bronze medals, edging Western Region to second place with five gold, four silver and five bronze medals. Nairobi was third with three gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
