Over 200 runners on Sunday took to the trails of Karura Forest for a fun run to raise additional funds ahead of the Lewa Safari Marathon on June 29.

The Lewa Safari Marathon, held annually at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Isiolo County, is a premier event dedicated to raising funds for wildlife conservation.

The fun run, organised by Safaricom in collaboration with Tusk, featured three categories – 5km, 10km and 21km.

Shem Oluchiri, Head of Communication, Development and Engagement at Lewa Conservancy, highlighted the importance of Sunday's run as a precursor to the main marathon.

“This event was significant for us as it not only brings attention to Lewa but also serves as a precursor to the main event,” Oluchiri remarked.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to all the sponsors who have supported this initiative. Special thanks go to Safaricom, whose invaluable support over the past 25 years has helped us gain global recognition."

The marathon has so far raised over Sh850 million, supporting both wildlife conservation and community development.

More than Sh400 million has been directly invested in the protection of endangered species, general wildlife and their habitats.

Oluchiri also noted that the conservancy is well-prepared for this year's marathon, which has attracted over 1,500 participants.
