Nyabigena, Kerongorori bag Kisii county football titles

Nyabigena defeated Omwari 1-0 in a tense final while Kerongorori beat Ayora 2-0 in a tough final.

St Joseph’s Nyabigena and Kerongorori Mixed bagged the Kisii county boys’ and girls’ football titles as the curtains came down on the county term two games at Nduru Boys.

Nyabigena defeated Omwari 1-0 in a tense final while Kerongorori beat Ayora 2-0 in a tough final. In the boy’s final, Bekham Amin scored the all-important goal as Nyabigena won their maiden under-19 title.

Kerongorori, enjoying the support of their principal Peter Nyamoko, were too strong for Ayora. Christine Kerubo and Cynthia Orangi scored in either half as Kerongorori retained the title they won last year at Kisii School.

Nyamoko said: “We had three teams here. The girls retained the football title while the boys were eliminated in the quarter-finals. We have also introduced rugby in the school. Next year, we hope to win more titles.”

Nyabigena and Kerongorori will carry the county flag to the Nyanza regional championships to be played at Maranda School and Nyamira Girls next month.

However, Nyabigena’s win was contested by Omwari over the fielding of alleged ineligible players. The case will be heard next week.

Meanwhile, Little-known Itumbe Mixed came from two sets down to beat Mobamba High 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-9) in a five-set thriller to lift a maiden volleyball title.

Nyakembene retained the girls’ volleyball title after a 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-12, 25-15) win over Kiabigoria. Nyakembene coach Duncan Onenga said: “The competition has been very stiff. Kiabigoria were worthy opponents.”

Nyanchwa Boys and Kereri Girls clinched the 3x3 basketball titles. Nyanchwa beat Kisii School 21-10 to win the title.

In the girls’ category, Kereri Girls, inspired by Nivar Nyakundi, beat Suneka Girls 7-3 to lift the title. All the finalists will represent the county at the regionals.

Ayora narrowly beat St Peter’s Keberesi 25-24 to win the netball title while Kisii School edged Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho to bag the rugby 7’s title.

In Nyamira county, St Paul’s Gekano High School clinched the rugby Sevens and volleyball titles.

In rugby, Gekano beat Enkinda 12-5 while in volleyball, they won by straight sets against St Kizito Nyansiongo.

Gekano basketball coach Wilfred Ongwenyi said: “Last year, we were eliminated at the semis, this time we are aiming at the finals.”

In the girls’ category, Ikonge Girls beat Sironga by straight sets to lift the title.

Ekeroyoro Technical won the boys’ and girls’ 3x3 basketball titles. In the boys’ category  Ekenyoro narrowly beat St Kizito Nyansiongo 9-8 in an epic final to win the title while in the girls’ category, Ekenyoro saw off Rigoma Girls 7-5.

Matutu PAG beat Gekendo 1-0 to win the boys’ soccer trophy while Gekomoni reclaimed the girls’ title during the three-day championships held at Nyakongo High School.
