Nairobi County Swimming Association chairman Teddy Wamuyu has thrown his hat into the ring, targeting the president's seat at the national elections scheduled for July 8.

Wamuyu said one of his campaign pillars is to ensure the sport has a fresh start following years of wrangles as well as take the sport to the grassroots.

"It's been a torrid seven years with failed promises with our swimmers suffering. It's time for a new beginning and time to take the sport to the grassroots,” noted Wamuyu.

Wamuyu, having served as the chairman of the defunct Nairobi Amateur Swimming Association (NASA) as well as running Raptors Swimming Club, said he is the best-suited person to lead the new Kenya Aquatics Federation.

“I believe I have what it takes to lead the new federation based on the experience I have gained as an administrator and coach," he observed.

Wamuyu is being backed by various county leaders.

"The various swimming counties in the country have given me their backing and I am confident we can transform the sport and take it to the next level," added Wamuyu.

Wamuyu's camp included Stanley Kaberu from Kiambu county (first vice), Hillary Leboi from Uasin Gishu (second vice), Collins Marigiri (secretary), Laikipia's Omari Omari (treasurer) and Anthony Njuguna (assistant secretary).

Wamuyu has asked Sports Registrar Rose Wasike to allow the elections to go ahead despite her reservations over the composition of the Stabilisation Committee.

"World Aquatics have given us a last chance. We can't afford to squander this opportunity and if we do, we will be banned and it's our swimmers who will suffer the consequences," he said.

Seven counties are expected to vote in the elections including Nairobi,  Mombasa, Kajiado, Machakos, Laikipia, Kiambu and Kisumu.

The full list of candidates for the various seats is expected to be released next week by the Centre of Corporate Governance, which is expected to conduct the polls.
