Azpilicueta: Winning Champions League 'best moment' in Chelsea shirt

Cesar Azpilicueta has said winning the 2021 Champions League with Chelsea remains the best moment of his career in a farewell message to the fans after sealing a move to Atletico Madrid.

The Spaniard ended an 11-year trophy-laden career with the blues after signing  a one-year  contract with the Diego Simeone-coached side.

The 33-year-old had 12 months left on his Chelsea contract.

"It is difficult to express how I feel, it has been incredible," he said.

A tearful Azpilicueta added: "I feel I gave everything. I love it.

"I think it would be pretty obvious to pick the highest moment of my career, when we won the Champions League in Porto. It was my first trophy as captain.

"Chelsea is my home, it always will be and hopefully I can come back in a different role."

Azpilicueta boasts of two Premier League titles, the Fifa Club World Cup, Uefa Super Cup and two Europa League trophies.

He played for Osasuna before moving to Olympic Maseille in France. He was signed by Chelsea in August 2012.

He made 508 appearances, scoring 17 goals and succeeded Gary Cahill as captain in 2019.

The full-back is capped 44 times by Spain.
