Madira Assassins coach Francis Muhambe says his main objective is to be among the top Women's Premier League teams at the conclusion of the WPL first-leg fixtures.

Speaking after his side came from behind to secure a point at home to Zetech Sparks at Mumboha grounds on Sunday, Muhambe emphasised the importance of minimising the gap between his team and the leaders.

"Our main goal is to ensure that we are not so far away from position one at the end of the first-leg fixtures," said Muhambe. "That way, we will be able to contend for the league title."

He, however, acknowledges the fierce competition from teams like Vihiga Queens, Police Bullets, Zetech Sparks, and Ulinzi Starlets.

''The competition in this league is very high. In order to call ourselves true title-contenders, we need to get maximum points from Vihiga — who are by far the strongest team in the league — Zetech, Police, and Ulinzi," he said.

However, Muhambe expressed concerns over Football Kenya Federation rules which restrict the registration of some of his talented players due to their young age.

He hopes for a swift resolution to this issue as he anticipates registering the said players by November 25.

In the meantime, Muhambe is preparing his team for a Vihiga derby, against Bunyore Starlets on Saturday at Mumboha grounds.

He stressed the significance of rectifying mistakes made against Zetech ahead of the derby.

"That game is a determining factor for us. It is a match that comes with so much pressure. We are hoping to correct the few mistakes we made against Sparks," Muhambe said.

''Our striker Valery Nekesa has been a target by opponents during games because she is basically our goal-scorer. She is outmarked and surrounded by over four players," he added.

"We will find a way to overcome that in training since she needs space to play and score. Nekesa is a vital member of our team. She must be protected."

Furthermore, Muhambe lauded the outstanding performance of centreback Phanice Lwosi, terming her the player of the match against Zetech.

"Lwosi must be hailed since she completely controlled that match. She made sure Anna Arusi did not get a chance to flourish Arusi was substituted," Muhambe concluded.

Muhambe commended Rebecca Kwoba, a former Assassins player who currently represents Zetech.

Kwoba, familiar with the Assassins' style of play, gave her former team a lot of problems to Muhambe's chagrin. She is at Zetech on a scholarship.
