Nyamira County boys' football final shelved following appeals

St Paul’s Gekano, who are the county's 15's champions beat Nyakongo High 10-7 to retain the boys’ rugby 7s title.

Nyamira County Secondary Schools boys’ soccer representatives at the regional championships will be determined later after the final failed to proceed on Saturday at Kiendege Secondary School.

The final pitting St Paul’s Gekano High School and Nyaibasa failed to take off after the losing semi-finalists lodged appeals against the finalists claiming they fielded ineligible players.

In the semis, Nyaibasa eliminated last year’s winners Matutu PAG  4-3 win on post-match penalties after a barren draw in regular and extra time. In the other semi, St Paul’s Gekano beat Gekendo 1-0. 

Nyamira County Secondary Schools Sports Association secretary Hesborn Okerio said the final would not proceed until the appeal is heard and determined

“We expect to have the appeal heard and determined next week before staging the final. We want to have the best team to represent us at the regional championships in Kisii next month,” said Okerio.

Little-known Geke Mixed lifted the girls’ football title after a 2-0 win over St Thomas Moore. In the semis, Geke defeated Riyabe 2-0 while St Thomas Moore beat Ikonge by a similar margin.

In the semi-finals, Gekano beat rivals St Kizito Nyansiongo 5-0 while Nyakongo booked a slot after Enkinda were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player. Enkinda had won the match against Nyakongo 6-3 before being disqualified. 

In girls’ rugby 7s, Enkinda beat Rangenyo Girls 7-5 to lift the title. Enkinda thrashed Kiabiraa 24-0 to qualify for the finals while Rangenyo needed a sudden death try to beat Ekenyoro 5-0.

Rirumi, inspired by the competition’s Most Valuable Player Susan Kwamboka,  saw off powerhouses Sironga Girls 21-15 to successfully defend the netball title. Rirumi walloped Gekendo 36-4 as Sironga defeated Onsando Girls 27-14.

Sironga Girls claimed the basketball 3x3 title after a hard-fought 12-9 win over Manga Girls. Jesca Auma of Manga Girls was named the MVP. Ekenyoro Technical beat St Kizito Nyansiongo 10-6 to lift the boys 3x3 basketball title.

Ekenyoro Technical coached by experienced referee Festus Segera narrowly beat St Paul’s Gekano 8-0 in the semi-finals while St Kizito Nyansiongo overcame Nyakongo High 8-2.

Little-known Etono overcame a stubborn Nyaibasa 3-1 (25-14, 25-19, 30-32, 25-17) to win the boys’ volleyball title. In the semis, Nyaibasa beat last year’s winners St Paul’s Gekano 3-1 while Etono defeated Gesiaga in straight sets.

In the girls’ category beat Ikonge Girls 3-1 (25-14, 25-19,21-25, 25-20) to win their maiden county title. In the semi-finals, Riooga defeated Nyakeore 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-18) while Ikonge Girls overcame Ikamu 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-18).
