Kibabii reach Western Region football semis with match to spare

In volleyball, reigning East Africa champions Namwela (boys) and multiple national champions Lugulu (girls) also booked semis slots.

Kibabii stormed the football semis set after registering two victories with a game in hand in the ongoing Western Region Secondary Schools Term Two ball games at the Bungoma High School.

A brace from Brighton Jack handed the Bungoma-based school their second victory against Chavakali (2-0), adding to their 1-0 win over John Osogo on Wednesday.

Captain Ian Kibet said their target is nothing short of winning the regional title ahead of the national championships set for Kisumu next week.

“We have been looking for this title for long and I hope we will maintain the momentum to make it to Kisumu,” said Kibet.

He said as a captain, he must take charge to ensure they win their last match against Munyuki from Kakamega.

“We aim to finish top in the pool, maintain the lead into the semifinal and win the overall title. We will follow the instructions of our coach to the letter,” he added.

In another Pool ‘A’ match at the same venue, Munyuki defeated Chavakali 2-0 as David Osango scored a brace. Munyuki coach Enock Kimutai remained optimistic they would make it to the final.

On their way to defend the title, Namwela recorded easy victories against Vihiga and Katakwa with a similar 3-0 margin. They trounced Vihiga  25-15, 25-15,  25-15 and beat Katakwa 25-15, 25-09, 25-15 to reach Friday’s semis.

Namwela coach Isaac Muresha said they are looking beyond the nationals. “We are here with the sole purpose of defending our title but the ultimate goal is to retain the East Africa crown,” he said.

Bungoma’s Lugulu had to work extra hard to beat the defending champions Mwitoti from Kakamega in a five-setter thriller.

Lugulu came from a set down to beat Mwitoti 3-2 (26-24, 27-25, 5-25, 22-25,12-15). Lugulu trounced Mudavadi Girls from Vihiga 3-0 25-08, 25-08, 25-10.

In other girls’ volleyball, Mwitoti beat Kongadole from Busia 3-0 (25-07, 25-09, 25-12). It was a bad day in office for Kingadole as they also fell to Muvadavi Girls 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-21,25-16).

In Pool B, Butere beat Amukura 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-14) as Miruri beat Chamakanga with a similar set margin of 25-19, 25-11, 25-17.
