Kenyan teams now turn focus on East Africa championships

KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi said the teams that qualified will camp in Kakamega for 10 days before they depart for the regional extravaganza.

Following the conclusion of the National Secondary Schools Term Two Games, Kenyan teams have now turned their focus on the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) scheduled for -----in Mbale, Uganda.

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Secretary General David Ngugi said the teams that qualified will camp in Kakamega for 10 days before they depart for the regional extravaganza.

They will be joined at the camp in Kakamega by teams that qualified in the first term. The teams will leave for Uganda on Friday and the games will kick off on August 18.

Ngugi said boys will camp at Musingu High School while girls will reside at Mukumu Girls for intensive training.  The teams departed from Kisii to Kakamega on Friday and draws were held yesterday in Uganda.

The teams that qualified to represent Kenya during the Term Two Games are Highway, Musingu and St Joseph’s Kitale (boys football); Butere, Nyakach and St Joseph’s Kitale (girls football); Bwake, Vihiga Boys, St Mary’s Yala and Kisii School (boys’ rugby 7s); St Joseph’s Kitale, Kinale Girls, St Theresa’s and Nyagechenche (girls’ rugby 7s).

Other teams are, Cheptil, Namwela, Nyabondo, and Hospital Hill High School (boys’ volleyball), Kwanthanze, Kesogon, Soweto, Soweto Academy and Lugulu  (girls volleyball), Oyugi Ogango, Bumala AC and Andersen (netball).

St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale, Butere Girls and Nasokol(basketball 3x3), St Joseph’s Kitale, Onjiko, and Friends School Kamusinga (basketball 3x3 boys).

During the five-day championships held at Kisii School, Gusii Stadium and Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho, the Rift Valley region once again reigned supreme, bagging the overall title after garnering 100 points.

Nairobi were second with 94 points while hosts Nyanza came third with 85 points.

Western was relegated to the fourth position with 80 points while Central finished fifth with 67 points. Eastern (59 points), Coast region (55 points) and North Eastern region (13 points) in that order.

The Most Valuable Players were Deborah Akoth (netball), Lorna Faith (girls' football), Humphrey Aroko (boys' football), Marylyn Terry (girls volleyball), Reagan Otieno (boys volleyball), Rael Nyaranda (rugby 7s), Mweresa (boys rugby 7s), Solomon Leek (boys' basketball 3x3) and Gai Nyayual (girls 3x3 basketball).

State Department for Education Director General, Elyias Abdi, who was the chief guest during the closing ceremony, hailed the event sponsors and partners.

He commended the organisers, referees, umpires, commissars, coaches, and officials for the successful event.

“The officials exhibited professionalism, objectivity, impartiality, fairness, and stuck to the rules which made the event a success,” said Abdi.

He condemned hooliganism which occurred during the game between Musingu and Koderobara.

“I wish to reiterate that there should be no room for hooliganism in school sports and competition,” he added.
