Huruma Sports Grounds in Nairobi will receive a new phase lift courtesy of Mobile phone company, Tecno.

The first phase of the project will take 12 weeks and will cost Sh 4 million.

The initiative is part of Techno’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, under which the company plans to refurbish 100 stadiums across Africa.

The first phase of the renovation will focus on improving drainage and levelling the field, with subsequent phases addressing the wall, toilets, and water supply.

“At a ground like this, your soccer boots last barely three weeks before they’re worn out and injuries are common. The infrastructure just isn’t there for supporters either as there’s nowhere to sit. When you play here, you can’t be sure your dream of becoming a star will never be realised,” said Wilfred Odera, Tecno marketing manager.

Odera emphasised the importance of creating top-tier facilities. “We want this done to optimum standards. Once the ground is done, we’ll have one team the teams here face off with league giants Gor Mahia,” he noted.

The ground is the main football facility in the Huruma area and Tecno is keen to give it an international touch.

“We need your support to make this project a success; to benefit the entire community,” said the contractor Brian Alando as he addressed the football enthusiasts present.

Victor Muli, a local footballer, expressed optimism about the initiative. “As someone who grew up in Kariobangi, I hope this ground will be built to international standards because we want to see more Division Two and Super League matches played here.”

Muli said financial challenges have always hindered teams from honouring away fixtures and this ground will go a long way in solving the problem.

He called on Tecno to empower the youth in the area by introducing income-generating activities like renting tents and chairs at the venue besides sponsoring at least one team in the area.

“We also want the ground to be secured to prevent hooligans from accessing it,” he said.

Tecno brand ambassador and former Harambee Stars Forward Dennis Oliech attended the ceremony.
