With the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) Series coming to an end, Wafula, who became the first woman to win the amateurs event at  Kiambu Open three weeks ago, will lead other women golfers to battle for the title in a male-dominated meeting. The event has only attracted five lady golfers.

Wafula will tee off at 8:30 am alongside Joseph Sulubu (Malindi) and John Orongo of Nyali. She won the Kiambu title after beating Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga in one of the hard-fought play-offs.

“I always enjoy competing against men and giving them a hard time.  They have always given us a good challenge,” said Wafula.

Golf Park’s Margaret Njoki will tee off at 8:10 am alongside England’s Connor Scott and Malindi’s Henry Akello.

Kiambu’s Joyce Wanjiru will be at the tee alongside Royal’s Peter Ndung’u and Dahiv Awdeer of Nyali. To usher in the celebrations, the club will host the Greensomes tournament and the Centenary Golf Day at the 18-hole course on Saturday which will culminate in a gala dinner where 1000 guests are expected.

Club’s chairman Dominic Chege said: “It has been a century of learning, progress, and growth filled with immense contributions from individuals who have been committed to the excellence of this great club. We have held a lot of activities before the event that have been part of the 100-year milestone. I am calling upon golfers from Nairobi and its environs who have not signed up for the weekend’s tourney to consider registering because it will be a fun-filled event.”

As part of the centenary celebrations, the club hosted an expo golf day, swimming competition, bowling, juniors’ chess competition, junior tournament and charity golf that culminated in a tree planting exercise.
