Indiza returns to Sigona for ‘Road to Kenya Open’ series

"The essence will be to hit the fairways more and putt well on the greens,” said Indiza.

Mumias professional Dismas Indiza will be among the star attractions during the third round of the 2023/24 Safari Tour Series at the par 72 Sigona Golf Course from January 6-10.

Indiza hopes to replicate the form that saw him open his ‘Road to Magical Kenya Open’ with a record seventh win at the Johnnie Walker Uganda Pro Golf Open last October.

The 54-year-old Indiza fired a gross total of 11-under par 277 to lift the title. His other wins at the Kitante event came in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2018.

At the second leg of the series at Vet Lab last month, Indiza tied for second with Railway Club’s Samuel Njoroge in a tournament won by homeboy Mike Kisia.

“I am happy with my swing at the moment. My short game is also good. I hope to play well at Sigona. The essence will be to hit the fairways more and putt well on the greens,” said Indiza.

Other top pros expected are Greg Snow from Muthaiga Golf Club, Great Rift’s Jastas Madoya, Golf Park’s David Wakhu, Njoroge Kibugu and Eric Ooko as well as regional players including Liberty Gumisa from Zimbabwe.

The 72-hole four-round strokeplay third leg of the series will be curtain-raised by Pro-Am tournament on Saturday. The main draw is set for Sunday through Wednesday.

CJ Wangai, Chairman of the Professional Golfers of Kenya, said the Pro-Am offers amateurs an opportunity to grasp requisite skills from the pros.

“For Saturday’s Pro-Am, members will pay Sh1500 while non-members Sh4000. The Pro-Am will help the professionals shake off the rust before the tournament proper on Saturday. Being a qualifier to the Kenya Open, we expect the pros give it their all on the course,” said Wangai.

The Magical Kenya Open, DP World Tour (European Tour), is slated for Muthaiga Golf Club between February 22 and 25. Event Director Patrick Obath said eight local pros and two from the region will feature at the prestigious tournament.

The Kenyan leg of the DP World Tour will carry a colossal prize kitty of Sh314,700,000) and 3,000 Road To Dubai Ranking points.

The Race to Dubai Rankings, in Partnership with Rolex, is a season-long competition to crown the DP World Tour’s Number One player.
