Kisii School started their hunt for the Kisii County Secondary Schools rugby 7’s title on a flying note after a resounding 48-0 win over Nyagichenche as Term Two Games kicked off on Wednesday.

In the match played at Nyakeyo Secondary, Kisii School led 20-0 at the breather. Kisii School are also the county and regional 15’s champions.

The school’s games master, Hesborn Chweya,  was bullish on the team’s chances of winning the 7’s title.

“We want to lift the 7’s title. Our target is to reach the nationals again. Most of the players who represented us at the nationals in 15’s are also playing for the 7’s team,” said Chweya.

He cited Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho as their main rival.

Former champions Nyabigena and Itierio Boys also recorded wins. Nyabigena edged Moi Gesusu 19-0 while Itierio Boys drubbed St John’s Nyamagwa 22-10.

In their second game, Moi Gesusu played to a 10-10 draw against Orogare. Nyagichenche thrashed Nyakeiri 34-0 as Igonga also recorded a 29-0 over Riokindo.

In the absence of last year’s champions Nduru Boys, new winners will emerge. Nduru were eliminated at the sub-county level by Nyabigena.

Nduru, who were last year’s semifinalist at the nationals, have been on a downward spiral after the transfer of former principal J.J. Masime.

In Kisumu County, Maseno School will have an easy ride as they seek to retain their title when the championship gets underway today (Thursday) at Kisumu School.

Maseno will open their campaign in Pool ‘A’ against Lions School before taking on Nyamasaria.

In Pool B, Nyabondo, Kisumu School, and Kwoyo Mixed will square it out while in Pool ‘C’ Thurdbuoro, Magwar Mixed and Ngere Boys will battle it out.

Pool D has emerging sports powerhouse Onjiko School, Otieno Oyoo and Chemelil Academy.
