Former Kenya Cup champions KCB have named Griffin Musila as captain for the upcoming 2023 -2024 Kenya Cup season.

In a post on their X account, the club said Musila replaces long-serving prop Curtis Lilako, who retired at the end of last season after 14 years with the Thika Road side.

Musila, who plays as a hooker and has been part of the KCB teams that have won multiple Kenya and Enterprise Cup titles in the last six seasons, will be keen to reassert their dominance in the 15s game after finishing trophyless in the last two seasons.

Musila, an alumnus of Kakamega High School has been capped by the Kenya Simbas in the last couple of years.

He captained Kakamega High to winning the national schools 15 title in 2011.

The bankers are in transition with several young players being drafted to the side and assistant coach Dennis Mwanja is confident there will be an upturn of results for the upcoming season.

“Musila is an experienced player. He has been part of the team for a long period and with the leadership group in the squad, I believe we will be competitive and reclaim the Kenya Cup crown this coming season,” said Mwanja.

The bankers started their training in August and Mwanja expects the side to be competitive when the pre-season Impala Floodlits starts mid this month.

“We are the Floodlits defending champions and we want to win it again since this will boost our confidence ahead of the new season,” added Mwanja.

The bankers have won the Floodlit a record nine times with four coming in the last four years and Mwanja admits it all boils down to preparations.

“Our preparation involves key attention to detail. We dissect the game... from the scrum, line-out, attack, defence and every player has a part to play in the success of the team,” added Mwanja.
