Fireworks await as the Kenya Rugby Union  (KRU) conduct their Special General Meeting today at the RFUEA ground

The meeting comes hot on the heels of the acrimonious and tension-filled Annual General Meeting in March, where the affiliates rejected all the motions on the agenda paper.

Key among them was the vote of no confidence in chairman Alexander Mutai filed by Bungoma and Kisumu RFC clubs. However, Mutai is on record as saying the motions had not followed due process.

All motions on the order paper were rejected by the members including the financial report presented by Treasurer Joshua Aroni.

Aroni had presented lumpsum figures on the Barthes Cup held in April last year,  totalling Sh58 million and with Sh152 million spent on the Junior World Trophy held at Nyayo stadium in July.

However, members demanded a detailed breakdown of how every penny was spent. They also wanted to be furnished with the monies spent on the Kenya Sevens team which amounted to Sh71 million and the Kenya Simbas team who received Sh27 million.

The motion to have—Edward Rombo, Andrew Musangi and Waiyaki Hinga enlisted in the KRU Appeals Council failed as the nominees failed to show up for the meeting.

The members also rejected the 2024 -2028 Strategic Plan, claiming there was no public participation and engagement.

Speaking Thursday, Mutai said sobriety will rule during the meeting and called on members to uphold integrity and decorum at the meeting.

“ The last meeting did not go as planned but this meeting should allow us to set the record straight and look at the audited accounts among other issues on which we did not agree," added Mutai.

He expressed confidence that the political noises at the union will be part of the past.  “I'm confident that in the coming few weeks, the noise will tone down and we will continue with our work.  We have no time to waste as the focus is on the national teams including Shujaa, Lionesses and Chipu— all preparing for international assignments.”

Mutai has been involved in a long-running feud with Secretary Raymond Olendo over integrity issues.
