Olago leaves KCB Rugby club after 13 years stint

 KCB RFC have parted ways with the long-serving coach Curtis Olago. 

A statement from the club read: “We can confirm the departure of our head coach Curtis Olago after the expiry of his contract on August 31, 2024. This marks the end of an era for the coach who has been at the helm since 2011."

The alumni of Nairobi School joined the club in 2008 as a player before transitioning to coach in 2011

Under Olago’s leadership, KCB Lions achieved unparalleled success, securing the Kenya Cup title five times. His tenure also saw the team win two National Sevens Circuit titles, five Great Rift 10s, three Enterprise Cups and numerous Floodlit rugby titles.

His influence extended beyond the club, as he served as the assistant coach for the Kenya Fifteens side at the national level.

Olago’s legacy at KCB Lions is one of remarkable achievement and dominance. He maintained an unbeaten record in the National Sevens Circuit for two years, leading the team to victories in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, his strategic prowess brought home the Great Rift 10's title five times and the Enterprise Cup thrice.

Following Olago's exit, KCB have appointed assistant coach Oliver Mangeni in an acting capacity.

KCB RFC Patron Japheth Achola said: “We thank Olago for his service to the club. He has been instrumental in positioning KCB Rugby as a top club in the local rugby scene and has played a pivotal role in the development of the sport in the country. We wish him all the very best in his future coaching career.”

Mangeni who is the current lineout coach for KCB, played for the bankers for 12 years from 2010 up until deciding to hang up his boots at the end of the 2022 Kenya Cup season.

The towering  Mangeni, won the Kenya Cup a record five times in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

He won the Enterprise Cup on three occasions – 2015, 2016 and 2017. He has five floodlit titles under his belt thus— 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019.

'Olishe' as he is famously known, won two consecutive National Sevens Circuit titles in the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 seasons.

He won the Rugby Africa Cup in 2013 and was part of the World Cup qualifiers squad that missed out on the World Cup qualifications by a point difference in 2014.
