Strathmore Leos rugby coach Wilis Ojal wants his side to improve on their defensive alignment if they are to challenge for the National Sevens Series.

The Madaraka-based outfit have blown hot and cold in the opening two tournaments, posting mixed results.

Leos reached the semifinals of the Christie Sevens, where they bagged 15 points but struggled in the Kakamega Ingo Sevens, where they finished seventh with eight points.

The varsity-based side beat Nakuru 17-10 but then lost 10-5 to KCB and suffered a shock 17-12 loss to Kabete Stallions to bow out at the quarter-final stage.

In the classification matches, Strathmore beat Homeboyz RFC 26-7 and Daystar 38-12. In the Challenge trophy final, they edged Blak Blad 19-14.

Ojal believes there is room for improvement with four tournaments to go.  “Defence is where we are struggling. If you look at our performance on Day One in Kakamega, we conceded soft tries. We got better on Day Two. We, therefore, have work to do to ensure tackle technique is better," said Ojal.

From an attacking perspective,  Ojal said the team is in the right space.  “We are scoring tries which is a good sign for us. With the firepower at our disposal and the calibre of players we have,  we will cause problems for many teams,” added Ojal.

Leos are currently fifth on 23 points and Ojal believes his charges can compete against top sides like Kabras, KCB and Quins for the overall title.

“Our target is to win the Sevens circuit and with four events remaining, I believe this is the most open circuit we have had in years and the boys are fired up," noted Ojal.

After the Dala Sevens on August 17-18, the teams will then converge in Nairobi for the Kabeberi Sevens slated for August 24-25 at the RFUEA  ground.

The final two tournaments are slated for September 7-8 in Mombasa and September 14-15 in Nakuru.
