Shujaa forward Kevin Wekesa has been named in a star-studded Monaco Sevens side for the Supersevens opening tournament in Mont-de-Marsan, France, this Saturday.

He joins former Kabras teammate, Rosco Syster, and South African player-maker Rosko Specman.

The squad also features Argentina 7s stars Augustin Fraga, Gaston Revol, and Fernando Luna.

Others are Spanish star Pol Pla, New Zealand’s Jayden Keelan and Fijian Semi Kunabuli.

The Supersevens is the first professional Sevens club championship in France and will be contested over three legs this season.

The tournaments are scheduled for Mont-de-Marsan on August 17, La Rochelle on August 24 and Pau on August 31 — culminating with the finals day at Paris La Defense Arena on September 1.

Wekesa is delighted to play alongside some of the biggest names in the Sevens rugby.

“It's an honour to play alongside the big names in Sevens rugby, expand my craft and help me become a better player. We look at going back to the World Sevens Series in December," he said.

Wekesa was scouted during the Paris Olympic Games, where Kenya finished ninth after wins over Uruguay and Samoa.

The Kabras forward termed the Olympics an eye-opener on what to expect in the World Sevens Series.

“The players and the technical bench have learnt their lessons from the  Olympics. The next three months will be about improving ourselves and being competitive," said Wekesa.

Kenya were relegated from the Worlds Seven Series at the end of the 2022-2023 season but bounced in the promotion playoffs this year in Madrid, beating Germany 33-15.

Shujaa will start their pre-season mid-next month upon the conclusion of the national Seven series.

World Rugby have released the calendar for the first five tournaments — Dubai Sevens slated for November 30 — December 1 followed by the Cape Town Sevens on December 7-8.

The Series will take a break before resuming with the Perth Sevens on  January 24-26, 2025, followed by the Vancouver Sevens on February 21-23 and the Hong Kong Sevens on March 28-30.
