Kenya U-12 side targets continental title after ruling East Africa

The continental tournament is set for Togo in October.

The Kenya under-12 team have set their sights on the African title after dominating the ITF/CAT Eastern Africa Junior Team Championships in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, last weekend.

The continental tournament is set for Togo in October.

The girls' team of Bathseba Ogamba, Paula Oduko and Naila Gikunda won all their matches against hosts Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

Coach Caroline Oduor praised her charges, saying: “I commend the girls for the brilliant work. We did not lose a match since the girls were determined to qualify and now we rest and start preparing for the continental title in October.”

Kenya edged Tanzania 3-0 with Gikunda defeating Gracious Shayo 6-0 6-0 as Ogamba made light work of Janeth Massawe in 6-0 6-1.

Oduko and Ogamba combined in the doubles to thrash Faraja Mbise and Shayo 6-0 6-1.

Team Kenya beat Uganda 3-0. Oduko beat Aliya Nakawooya 6-2 6-1 while Ogamba struggled to get past Florence Nabulima, coming through 6-1, 6-3.

In the doubles category, Gikunda and Ogamba gave their all while seeing off Nicole Namukasa and Florence Nabulima in a tiebreak 7-6 (3) 7-6(4).

Kenya then proved too strong for Burundi in their final match as Oduko thrashed Grace Uwimana 6-4 6-0.

Ogamba edged Sonia Uwimana 6-1 6-0 and in the doubles, Ogamba joined Gikunda in overcoming Samia Irakoze and Uwimana 7-6(3) 6-1.

Oduor added: “We cannot rest on our laurels. We have to work even harder for the Africa title. We will face top teams on the continent including Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and South Africa.”

The boys qualified for the African contest after finishing second.

They lost their opener 3-0 to Burundi but recovered from the defeat to thrash Tanzania 3-0.

Nathan Khalil beat Masatu Msomi 6-3 6-4  as Indiatsi Olembo whipped Daniel Kiliani 6-3 6-3. Olembo and Lewis Onyango overpowered Kiliani and Lamak Musaji 6-2 6-2 in the doubles.

Kenya then defeated Uganda 2-1. Khalil lost the opening match to Edson Enjama 7-5 6-1 but they bounced back to win their next two.

Olembo edged Cyril Ogonda 6-2 2-6 6-2 before combining with Onyango to edge Abby Damba and Ogonda 6-3 3-6 10-7.
