Muteshi leaves French club after professional stint of 18 months

Muteshi is an alumnus of St Peter's School, Mumias and was part of the team that won the East African 7s title in 2016.

Kenya Simbas' international Bethuel Muteshi has left third-division French side, Stade Caennaise RC.

The back-row forward joined the Stade Caennaise RC squad in January 2023 and has spent one year and eight months with the side.

In a post on his Instagram account, he said goodbyes are tough, stating that he cherished every moment with the club during the period.

"Thank you immensely for the incredible experience I’ve had with you @stade_caennais_rc. Goodbyes are indeed tough. I have cherished every moment of being part of your club. To my mates who welcomed me with open arms and made me a part of your team and culture with such warmth, I am truly grateful. Each one of you has been amazing and I have treasured every moment spent with you,” he stated.

He added: “Whether our impact on each other was big or small, I value it immensely. Playing alongside all of you has been an honour. I am proud of the battles we fought and the memories we created together. May the bonds we’ve formed and the memories we’ve shared live on forever. I salute every one of you. Thank you to the coaches for pushing me to grow and become a better player. I appreciate your guidance and support,” he added.

Muteshi is an alumnus of St Peter's School, Mumias and was part of the team that won the East African 7s title in 2016.

He last played for the Simbas during the Rugby World Cup qualifiers in France in 2022, where they lost to Namibia 38-0 in the Africa Cup final to miss out automatic slot at the World Cup. 

He termed playing in the French League as an eye-opener for his rugby development. “Very rewarding! I got to interact and play some of the top players across Europe and my play has greatly improved. We hope more Kenyan players can make the transition to top-flight rugby in Europe," added Muteshi.
